GM Ivan Sokolov’s long and rich chess career speaks for itself.
He is the winner of international tournaments in Biel, Hastings, Sarajevo, Selfoss, Reykjavik, Hoogeveen, Lost Boys Amsterdam, Staunton Memorial London…In 2009 he shared first place in the European Chess Championship. More recently in 2012, he won the World Open in Philadelphia, Politikin Cup and the Admiral Niels Cup.
He has been ranked as high as n°12 in the world, and has spent many years in the top 20.
His dynamic attacking style has brought him wins against 5 World Champions: G.Kasparov, V.Kramnik, V.Anand, V.Topalov and V.Smyslov, all-in classical time control games.
He had also had succes in team competitions: With his Chess Club Bosna he has won the European Club Cup 4 times, captaining the team thrice. He has participated in ten Chess Olympiads and seven National Team Championships.
Won with his Bosnian team Silver on the Olympiad in Moscow 1994 and Gold with his Dutch team in the European Club Cup in Gothenburg 2005.
In May 2010, Ivan succesfully organized one of the biggest Opens in the World, the Bosna Open.
In the midst of an intense playing schedule, Ivan found the time to write eight books: Winning Chess Middlegames was one of the bestsellers of 2009, The Ruy Lopez revisited injected new life into the Spanish opening and became an important reference work, Strategic Nimzo Indian shared his many years of experience with the structures of this popular opening.
Currently Ivan works in Dubai as the coach of the Iran National Team.
